China activates flood response across five provinces

BEIJING, CHINA / MENA Newswire / – China activated a Level-IV flood emergency response for five provinces as forecasters warned of heavy to extremely heavy rain through June 25. The Ministry of Water Resources placed Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou under the response on Thursday. The action marks the lowest level in China’s four-tier emergency system. Level I carries the most serious designation. The alert covers central and eastern areas facing rising flood risks.

The heavy rain forecast has raised concern over river levels, reservoirs and low-lying areas. Smaller waterways in affected regions face risks of exceeding warning marks. The ministry listed at-risk districts, flood-prone zones and reservoirs in province-level notices. It also directed local agencies to tighten checks on water projects. The measures focus on flood monitoring, emergency readiness and water infrastructure management across the five provinces.

China entered its annual flood season earlier this month. Authorities have monitored repeated rain belts across southern, central and eastern regions. The latest emergency response follows earlier severe weather that affected several of the same provinces. Flood control work often intensifies in June as rainfall expands across major river basins. Officials have urged local water departments to track rainfall, runoff and reservoir safety during the current weather system.

Flood risks widen across five provinces

The Ministry of Water Resources sent three work teams to Guizhou, Hubei and Hunan for field guidance. The teams will support local flood control work in areas under pressure from heavy rain. Water departments in the five provinces have received orders to strengthen hydrological monitoring. They must also review emergency plans and manage hydraulic infrastructure. The response aims to protect people, property and critical public facilities.

Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou include river systems, reservoirs and hilly terrain that need close supervision during prolonged rain. Mountain areas can face fast runoff after intense storms. Urban areas can also see waterlogging when drainage systems fill quickly. Authorities have focused on small and medium-sized rivers because they can react sharply to concentrated rainfall. Reservoir checks form another part of the current response.

Monitoring centers on rivers and reservoirs

The Level-IV action does not represent China’s highest flood response. It allows authorities to mobilize monitoring, inspections and field support at an early stage. The four-tier system gives officials a structure for raising or lowering action levels as conditions change. Local water authorities must report risks and maintain preparedness during the forecast period. The current alert remains tied to rainfall expected through June 25.

China’s flood emergency response comes as seasonal rain continues to test disaster prevention systems across several provinces. The latest measures place water control agencies on alert before river levels rise further. Officials have identified flood-prone zones and placed response teams in key provinces. The focus remains on rainfall tracking, river safety, reservoir operations and rapid coordination with local authorities. The response covers one of the broadest rain-risk areas of June.
